Information about Mr. Peter Denis Sutherland

Mr. Peter Denis Sutherland, Honorary KCMG, a graduate of Gonzaga College (one of the Irish schools managed by The Society of Jesus) is:

-A member of the Board of Trinity Foundation, a foundation which is closely connected with the University of Dublin, Trinity College, Dublin (hereinafter referred to as "the College").

-The President of the International Advisory Council of the College's Institute for International Integration Studies (IIIS) as well as a Member of the IIIS Consultative Board, a Board which is Chaired by Prof. Dermot McAleese -- a member of the Institute of International and European Affairs and a Pro-Chancellor of the College who was involved in my case. I note that Mr. Sutherland has contributed financially to the creation of IIIS.

-A member of the Irish Advisory Board of the Michael Smurfit Graduate Bussiness School of University College, Dublin (an institution which is a member of the TCD/UCD Innovation Alliance) -- a university whose members of staff where involved in my case and the case of my academic supervisor by certain members of staff of the College.

-A person who is closely involved with the reform process as well as with other developments taking place within the academic system of Ireland (whose talk I and my academic supervisor have attended).

-A member of the Royal Irish Academy (year of election 2002 for the Section PL & A)

-One of the Members of the Comite d'Honneur of the Institute of International and European Affairs, an institute of which I and my academic supervisor are full members.

-A patron of The Ireland Fund of Great Britain (an organization which belongs to The Ireland Funds).

-A strong supporter of European Integration and a former member of the First Jacques Delors Commission (with responsibilities for Competition, Social Affairs and Education).

-A Honorary European Chairman of the Trilateral Commission.

I also mention that, among many other positions, Mr. Peter Denis Sutherland:

-Was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI as a financial Consultor of the Extraordinary Section of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See.

-Is a member of the International Advisory Board of the IESE Bussiness School (Instituto de Estudios Superiores de la Empresa), the graduate business school of the University of Navarra -- a private Pontifical University which was founded in 1952 by St. Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer (the founder of The Prelature of the Holy Cross and Opus Dei, a personal prelature functioning under the governance of The Congregation for Bishops of the Roman Curia) as a corporate work belonging to the wider apostolate of Opus Dei, an apostolate which is known (and sometimes criticized, rightly or wrongly) for its social and political engagement.

-Is the Chairman of the Court of Governors and Council of the renowned London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), an appointment which is known for having generated a certain amount of controversy. Mr. Sutherland is also a Member of the Practitioner's Advisory Board of "Global Policy", an academic journal based at the LSE.

-Is a member of the Board of Directors of Koç Holding, a major industrial conglomerate in Turkey.

-Was formerly a Chairman of the Board of Directors of BP plc (a company previously known as The British Petroleum Company plc and as BP Amoco plc).

-Was formerly a non-executive director of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group (a banking and insurance holding company which is currently controlled by HM Treasury as a result of the "Blue Monday Crash of 2009").

-Is a member of the Board of Directors of BW group, an international maritime group involved with the tanker, gas and offshore segments of the oil and gas business.

-Is a member of the Advisory Board of Ely Lilly Holdings Ltd., a subsidiary of Ely Lilly and Company (a global pharmaceutical company which has been marred by a number of controversies).

-Is a member of the supervisor board of Allianz SE, one of the largest providers of financial services in the world.

-Was the Director-General of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) during the Uruguay Round, the GATT round which led to the creation of the World Trade Organization, an organization for which Mr. Sutherland has also acted as the first Director General.

-Has held the position of UN Special Representative for Migration, a position to which he was appointed by Mr. Kofi Atta Annan, the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations.

1. Jun. 2, 2009: Photos taken during the launch of the 2009 edition of "College Green" (the literary and arts journal of The Graduate Students' Union). One of my drawings was published in this journal, to which I was a contributor.
